Ladybugs, also known as Ladybird Beetles, sometimes invade homes during fall. The most common species to do this is the Asian Ladybird Beetle, which is widespread throughout the U.S. They are attracted most strongly to south-facing, light-colored buildings. They become active on warm days during winter and early spring when they attempt to get outside.
Lady beetles are predators that feed on other insects as both larvae and adults. There are more than 450 known species of lady beetles in North America. A number of exotic lady beetles have been purposely released in the U.S. as biological control agents for control of certain insect pests. The Asian Lady Beetle lives primarily in trees and eats mostly aphids. It is highly prolific, lives up to three years and has many color forms. It became established in the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 1980s after a series of releases by U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service scientists in Byron, Ga., and in other locations. Since those releases, the beetle has rapidly expanded its range and is now commonly found throughout the U.S.
Adult beetles are about 1/4 inch long, and the most common form is mustard-to-red with 16 or more black spots. A key identification feature of Asian Lady Beetles is the presence of two big false "eyes", twin football-shaped white markings behind the head. Females lay from 500 to 700 eggs each.
You can try to catch and release them outside, let them leave by themselves or vacuum them up. Care should be used when handling them; they emit a smelly orange-colored fluid from leg joints that can stain walls and fabrics, though it is not harmful to humans.
Use our Ultimate Flea Trap. Sometimes, deliberate and frequent placement of our Ultimate Flea Trap will result in effective ladybug as well as flea control. The adults are attracted to the small light and will be trapped on the associated glueboards. This way, you can visualize the efficacy of the solution. It is best to use at least one flea trap per room. Replacement glueboards are available for continued control.
The best solution if you already have a ladybug problem is to use the Black Vengeance Lady Beetle Trap, a revolutionary new product for ladybug control. If you want quick relief, this is your solution. No other ladybug trap works like this. Some companies sell small glueboard traps for ladybug control, but unfortunately, ladybugs do not come in small numbers. The Black Vengeance Lady Beetle Trap can handle very large quantities of ladybugs.
The BioCare Asian Ladybug Trap uses a special wavelength ultra-violet fluorescent light, as well as a pheromone lure, to attract indoor ladybugs. The ladybugs fall through the funnel and are trapped in the jar so you can safely dispose of them or release them outdoors.
